Dr. Hassan Ayariga, the presidential candidate for the All Peoples Congress (APC), expressed uncertainty about voting in the upcoming election due to the ongoing conflict in Bawku, his hometown. Speaking at the Signing of the 4th Presidential Elections Peace Pact, Dr. Ayariga stated, “I don’t know whether I will be able to vote because where I come from, every day there is gunshot.”
Dr. Ayariga’s concerns stem from the long-standing inter-ethnic conflict between the Mamprusis and Kusasis in Bawku, which has resulted in scores of deaths, injuries, and property destruction. The conflict has also led to the closure of schools and hospitals, exacerbating the economic hardship in the area.
As a flagbearer, father, and Ghanaian, Dr. Ayariga appealed to the government and fellow candidates to address the Bawku conflict, emphasizing its impact on the election and the country’s peace. He has been unable to visit Bawku for three months due to the violence, hindering his campaign efforts.
The Bawku conflict has its roots in colonial history, with the Mamprusis and Kusasis having differing opinions on who should be the traditional leader. Despite court rulings and interventions, the conflict persists, fueled by partisan politics and economic interests.
Dr. Ayariga’s plea for peace highlights the urgent need for a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict, ensuring the safety of residents and the conduct of peaceful elections.
The 4th presidential elections peace pact signing ceremony took place on November 28, 2024, at Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, with the theme “Pursuing Peaceful Elections, Non-Violence and Justice”. This event aims to promote peaceful elections and reduce violence during the electoral process.
